So my friend has this new-fangled gizmo that’s supposed to do your cooking for you. Sort of a cross between a blender and a pressure cooker and whatever else.
And it’s just such a hilariously over-the-top example of a dumbing-down lifestyle, of over-consumption or even over-marketing or whatever the term is.
Sure, it’s pretty neat to be able to blend your stuff and heat it up at the same time, and the thing comes with a book of recipes that are adapted for it, so that you don’t have to come up with any yourself.
But it makes you prepare meals without even knowing what’s happening. The recipes only drop the names of all the gizmo-parts to use, and which option you’re supposed to choose after dumping in all the ingredients, so you don’t even know that, say, the beaten eggs give the fluffiness or that it’s the yeast that makes stuff grow.
And, of course, you can buy further recipe books (”our sales representative will help you choose the best ones for you!”) so that, instead of learning techniques and being capable of cooking things according to any recipe, because you understand what cooking is, you’re chained to these appliance-specific things.
Now, I have nothing against food processors, and it’s wonderful to have a thing that minces your onion or beats your eggs for you. But this thing purposefully takes away the user’s capacity to cook. And it’s terrifying.
As a kitchen witch, I am offended :D
